Factors That Can Increase Colon Cancer Risk

Colon cancer is a cancer that starts in the large intestine which is colon. The colon is the last part of the digestive tract. Although colon cancer can happen at people with any age, but it usually affects elder people. There are some factors that can increase colon cancer risk which I’ll explain in the following paragraphs.
Being overweight or obese

If you are overweight or obese, you have a higher risk of suffering from colon cancer and even death. Being overweight increases the risk of colon and rectal cancer in men and women, but this is more pronounced in men. Achieving and maintaining a healthy weight may help reduce your risk.
Smoking
Long-term smokers of tobacco have a higher possibility to suffer and die from colon cancer than non-smokers. Smoking is one of the main causes of lung cancer, but it is also related to many other cancers. So it is best to stop smoking and quit as soon as possible.
Alcohol use

Colon cancer is related to moderate to heavy drinking. Even mild to moderate alcohol intake has certain risks. It is best not to drink. If people do drink, men should not have more than 2 drinks per day, and women should not have more than 1 drink per day. This may have many health benefits, such as reducing the risk of many types of cancer.

Being older

As you get older, your risk of colon cancer increases. Young adults can get it, but it is more common after 50 years old. The incidence of colon cancer in people under 50 years old is increasing, and the reason is not clear.

Certain types of diets

A diet rich in red meats such as beef, pork, lamb or liver, and processed meats such as hot dogs and some luncheon meats increases the risk of colon cancer. Cooking meats at extremely high temperatures which are fried, broiled or grilled produces chemicals that may increase your risk of cancer. It is not clear how much this may increase your risk of colon cancer. Low levels of vitamin D in the blood may also increase your risk. Following healthy eating habits, such as plenty of fruits, vegetables, and whole grains, and limiting or avoiding red and processed meats and sugary beverages may reduce the risk of suffering from colon cancer.
Conclusion
To sum up, those 5 factors above that can increase colon cancer risk are covered, which are being overweight or obese, smoking, alcohol use, being older, and certain types of diets. Hopefully everyone can follow these 5 factors from now onwards in order to avoid suffering from colon cancer and obtain a healthy body.
