Colon Cancer Treatments That You Should Know

Colon cancer is one of the most common cancers in both men and women around the world. If colon cancer is found early, it can usually be cured. Fortunately, since the mid-1980s, the mortality rate of this type of cancer has decreased, which may be due to the fact that this type of cancer is usually diagnosed earlier and treatments have been improved.
The treatment of colon cancer is not only therapies to cure or control the disease, but also has methods to manage your emotional and physical needs. The treatment depends on some factors such as the patient’s health history and cancer stage. The main types of colon cancer treatments are surgery, chemotherapy, and radiation therapy, which I’ll talk about each of them in the following paragraphs.

Surgery

Surgery is the most common treatment for colon cancer, which involves removing the tumor and some surrounding healthy tissue during the operation. It is also commonly referred to as surgical resection. Surgical options for colon cancer are such as laparoscopic surgery or traditional open surgery. During laparoscopic surgery, three or four small incisions are made to speed up recovery time and reduce blood loss. However, during open surgery, the surgeon will cut a large abdominal area to remove the tumor, which can lead to a longer hospital stay and a slower time of recovery.
Chemotherapy
Chemotherapy is the use of medicines to kill cancer cells. Chemotherapy is usually carried out in cycles, with a period of treatment followed by rest to give your body time to recover. After surgery, chemotherapy can be used to eliminate any remaining cancer cells. For patients with rectal cancer, chemotherapy and radiation therapy should be performed before surgery to reduce the tumor size and the cancer recurrence chances.
Radiation therapy

Radiation therapy uses high energy sources which includes X-rays and protons to destroy cancer cells. It can be used to shrink a large cancer before a surgery. Therefore, it can be removed more easily. If surgery is not an option, radiation therapy can be used to relieve symptoms and that includes pain. Radiation is sometimes combined with chemotherapy.
